The Department of Law at Rajshahi University (RU), in collaboration with the Faculty of Law, organized a two-day international conference titled “Human Rights and Social Justice: Issues and Challenges” today, Friday, October 6, 2023. The conference was inaugurated at the university’s Tajuddin Ahmed Senate Bhavan.
Distinguished Guests and Speakers
The inaugural ceremony was graced by the presence of distinguished guests, including:
- Professor Dr. Golam Sabbir Sattar, Vice-Chancellor of RU (Chairman)
- Justice Md. Enayetur Rahim, Appellate Division Judge, Supreme Court of Bangladesh (Chief Guest)
- Justice Md. Shahinaur Islam, Chairperson, International Crimes Tribunal-1 (Special Guest)
- Professor Dr. Daud Hassan, Founding Director, International Centre for Ocean Governance, Western Sydney University, Australia (Guest of Honor)
- Professor Sultan-Ul-Islam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration), RU

Key Highlights of the Inaugural Ceremony
- Justice Md. Enayetur Rahim, in his chief guest address, emphasized the importance of good governance in upholding human rights. He stressed that fair and speedy trial is a fundamental right enshrined in the Constitution. He also called for accountability of those involved in the state machinery to ensure human rights.
- Justice Md. Shahinaur Islam, in his special guest address, highlighted the role of education in promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms. He advocated for incorporating human rights into the education curriculum to shape the mindset of the younger generation.
- Professor Dr. Golam Sabbir Sattar, in his chairman’s address, reiterated the need to protect human rights and establish social justice at all costs. He emphasized that social inequality can be addressed by safeguarding these rights. He also called for collective efforts and advocacy to achieve these goals.
Conference Participants and Research Papers
The conference is bringing together over 400 teachers and students from 22 universities, both domestic and international. A total of 93 research papers on various legal issues will be presented by 121 researchers during the conference. The presentations will be held in four venues on the university campus.

The International Conference on Human Rights and Social Justice is a significant event that provides a platform for scholars, researchers, and practitioners to discuss critical issues related to human rights and social justice. The conference is expected to contribute to a better understanding of these issues and generate new ideas for promoting human rights and achieving social justice in Bangladesh and beyond.
